Very recently designated as such (2007 & 2008), Tobin Hill Historic District comprises approximately 1/2 square mile, located just north of Downtown San Antonio, bordered on the west by San Antonio College, and on the east by the old Pearl Brewing Company restoration/renovation project. The area couldn't be developed until a mule trolley was established in the mid-1800's from downtown to the area, to service the Pearl Brewing company, which was the major employer of local residents for many decades. There is a wide range of architectural styles, including Victorian era homes large and small, craftsman bungalows, four-squares, Colonial and Tudor-style homes. It is becoming magnet for local artists, and residents include young families, professionals, empty-nesters and retirees, most of whom are attempting to restore the older properties to their former historic beauty. Its proximity to the new Riverwalk extension/renovation, downtown, to medical facilities, San Antonio College, and Ft Sam Houston, as well as the relatively reasonable prices for historic homes enhance the desirability of the Tobin Hill Historic District.
