Neighborhoods, or subdivisions, in San Antonio, as in most cities in the country, vary greatly, and many different things affect the value of a neighborhood -- either intrinsic value or monetary value.  One of the greatest influences in the value of any neighborhood is the quality of the schools within the area.  Most cities in the United States have one large independent school district (independent from the state, independent from those of neighboring cities).  However, there are 18 independent school districts in Bexar County (pronounced Bayer) and the City of San Antonio, each with its own school board, tax base, and well-defined area of the city.  Because property taxes in Texas support the schools, the more valuable properties pay higher taxes, which support the schools in that independent school district -- an endless circle.  Because of this unique situation, people who are relocating to San Antonio need to determine their list of priorities when deciding on a home and its location.  If schools are the highest priority, then the higher ranking schools/school districts should be considered first, IF the price range is a fit.  If older properties in historic areas are a priority, then searches for homes should include only those areas.  If newer, or new homes on acreage are a priority, those neighborhoods are generally outside the 'outer' Loop 1604.
